Deputy General Yu Peng Held Tele-Conference with UIUC and Police to Discuss on Search for Missing Chinese Visiting Scholar

In the morning of June 13, Deputy Consul General Yu Peng held A tele-conference meeting with the Provost of UIUC Robert Jones and the Chief of Police at UIUC Jeff Christensen to discuss on the search work for the missing Chinese visiting scholar Yingying Zhang.

Deputy Consul General Yu Peng conveyed the high attention from Consul General Hong Lei on Ms. Yingying Zhang’s missing case and extended thanks to the university, police, teachers and students for their large amount of work on the case. Deputy Consul General Yu Peng said that this case has drawn wide concerns among the overseas studying Chinese students and overseas Chinese in America. Chinese conventional and new media has made comprehensive coverage on the case and people are very concerned with the safety of Ms. Yingying Zhang. He hoped that the police could intensify their efforts and strive to make a breakthrough as early as possible. UIUC has over 5000 Chinese students. The Chinese students’ parents are very concerned with the security of the university. He hoped the university could take measures to ensure safety of the Chinese students. The Chinese Consulate General in Chicago, Chinese students studying here and overseas Chinese would like to provide assistance to the investigation.

Provost Jones expressed strong concern and anxiety on behalf of the university on Ms. Yingying Zhang’s missing and said the university will do its best to provide assistance to find Ms. Yingying Zhang as early as possible and the university will take concrete measures to ensure the safety of the Chinese students in university. The university also said that it would provide support to Ms. Yingying Zhang’s families for their visit to the U.S.

Chief of Police Christensen briefed the latest update of the case, saying the missing case of Ms. Yingying Zhang is the on the top of their agenda. The police bureau has set up special investigation group for the case and FBI and other law enforcement agencies have already started working on it too, using all means to search for the vehicle Ms. Yingying Zhang was in before missing. The police also thanked for the large amount of work by the Chinese students studying in the U.S. and volunteers from Chinese communities. The police has established a special platform for releasing update on the case on a daily basis.
