Acting Consul General Liu Jun Attended New Iowa Government Inaugural Ceremony

On January 18th, 2019, Acting Consul General Liu Jun flew to Des Moines, Iowa to attend the inaugural ceremony and celebration of the new state government. US Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, state lawmakers and members of other branches of state government, as well as representatives from various fields comprised over thousands of guests in attendance.

At the inaugural ceremony, Governor Kim Reynolds, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, and other primary members of the new state government were sworn in under the supervision of the state supreme court justices. In her inaugural speech, Governor Reynolds expressed gratitude towards all those who carried her along with support and faith. She emphasized that the future of Iowa lies in maintaining solidarity, and that the new government must work harder to improve education, broadband access, mental health services and health insurance. In addition, the new government must come together to fend off the various challenges of the Internet age.

During the event, Acting Consul General Liu Jun personally congratulated Governor Reynolds and Lieutenant Governor Gregg on their elections, emphasizing that China values its special relationship with Iowa. Liu Jun made clear that he looks forward to further strengthening communication and collaboration with Iowa’s new government, bringing the mutually beneficial partnerships both sides share in various fields to ever-greater heights.

After taking over the position from former Governor Branstad in May of 2017, Governor Reynolds officially won the seat in last year’s midterm elections, and became Iowa’s first ever publicly elected female governor.

On the same day, Liu Jun also took a visit to Senator Grassley’s constituent office to meet State Director Carol Olson. Liu Jun expressed congratulations with regards to Grassley’s promotion to Senate President Pro Tempore. In addition, he commented that China takes very seriously the development of its relations with Iowa, and he welcomed State Director Olson to visit China in the future. In response, Olson mentioned that last summer, Senator Grassley visited China and his time there still resonated clearly within the banks of his memory. Olson remarked that Senator Grassley also values China-Iowa relations and hopes to stay in close communication with the Chinese side on this.
