On April 18, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met in Boao, south China's Hainan Province with former U.S. President George W. Bush, who is here for the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2009.

During his meeting with Bush, Premier Wen spoke highly of the former's contribution to the development of Sino-U.S. constructive and cooperative ties. He hoped Bush would continue to play a positive role in promoting bilateral relations. Premier Wen said that since President Obama took office, Sino-U.S. ties have got off to a good start. The two nations have been dedicated to building a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century. In the context of the spreading financial crisis and the increasing global challenges, the two countries share more broad common interest. The two nations should increase mutual trust, enhance coordination, jointly overcome the current difficulties and bring benefits to the two countries and people of the world, said Premier Wen. "We hope the U.S. economy will take a favorable turn as soon as possible, which is conducive to the world economy," he added.

Bush said it is uplifting to see the Sino-U.S. ties improving. Both China and the United States are major nations in the world and should keep close communication and cooperation. He said he would continue to contribute to the development of Sino-U.S. ties. The policies and measures that the Chinese government has taken to cope with the financial crisis have already yielded results and are very impressive, said Bush, adding that his country is also taking similar measures. The continuous growth of economies of both countries is crucial to the early recovery of the world economy, he said, stressing the two countries should strengthen coordination and cooperation in this regard.
